課程概述

This course examines a number of perspectives on the nature of organizations, processes in organizations, how organizations change, and organizations and their environments. It is intended as an introductory course for undergraduate students interested in thinking about and studying organizations. Nor prior exposure to the content area is required.

課程目標
The purpose of the course is to improve your effectiveness as a sociologist by introducing you to frameworks from the social sciences that are useful for understanding organizational processes and teaching you how to apply those frameworks to particular situations. Organizations have been studied from the perspective of several disciplines, including psychology, sociology, economics, and political science. The field of organization theory is at the intersection of these disciplines and focuses on applying their insights to diagnosing and solving organizational problems.

Organizations are more complicated than most appliances, and understanding how they work takes more than memorizing simple platitudes. Practices that worked well in the past will not necessarily continue to work well in the future, and changes that helped one type of firm may harm another. Thus, an effective education should teach you how to make good inferences about what will work and what will not in particular situations, and how to learn from your own experiences and those of others. The best way to do this is through exposure to both rigorous research and real-world cases. That is how this course is structured.

This course covers the broad principles of which underlie and/or affect all organization decisions; the semester will focus both on micro- and macro-level issues, including: (1) organization structure and strategy (2) bounded rationality and decision making (3) organizations as bureacracy (4) organization as contracts (5) organizations as institutions (6) organization as social relations (7) incentive in organizations (8) performance evalutaion

課程要求
Each class session will consist of lectures or presentation based on the collective project or case analysis. Students are expected to complete the readings before the class meets. You should be prepared to summarize the main points of weekly reading assignment and give particular thought to how you would apply the concepts learned from the textbook to the real world.

The assigned material should be read before class to facilitate comprehension and discussion of the material. Because class participation is a significant portion of your course grade, it is important that you strive to be a vital contributor to class discussions. When necessary, I will call on students randomly during the discussion session. However, I also expect you to contribute even if you are not called on directly.

Grades
Your grade in the course will be based on both individual and group efforts and performance. We will try to assess your understanding of the tools and concepts covered, your ability to integrate and apply them, and your contributions to the class's learning experience. To do this, we will weight various activities in roughly the following manner:
class participation and attendence 10%
Midterm report 10%
Final in-class exam 40%
Final group project reports 20%
Case analysis 20%

Class participation and case analysis will be graded by the instructor and your peers, since they are the ultimate beneficiaries of class discussion. As a way of rewarding students who contribute insights highly valued by their peers, each class member will be asked to cast a vote for the student or group whom they feel added most to the quality of class learning.

In addition to class participation, you should submit a short proposal before the mid-term and a project write-up before the last week of the class. Grading of these project write-ups is based on how well you diagnose the assigned organization(s) given your knowledge of organization theory. Reference material must be cited in the text and listed in your bibliography.

An important benchmark of progress is whether students can effectively locate the relevant information in time and apply this knowledge to the analyses of real cases. The following references might help you to achieve this goal:
